When I saw the exclamation points littered all over my Whatsapp and I thought: «Oh dear. What have I done?!»
Yes, their thoughts were with me but they certainly were panicking. I later learned that while they were sending those nice messages Aurelio was asking someone to check the incubation period for malaria. They were freaking out. And they wanted to be sure I wasn’t contagious. I had become a health risk; even among my colleagues!
Even the hospital wasn’t taking chances. I was ushered into a negative pressure room – the air from the room is controlled so that it doesn’t contaminate other part of the facility. These people weren’t taking chances in case I had a contagious respiratory disease.
«These people should just tell me they are scared I might have Ebola,» I thought.
Curiously, everyone who came a metre near me, was wearing a huge mask over their face, except Mrs Wolkerstorfer. She was thinking about it too. But was too nice to complain.
I was checked into the room about 10.30pm, asked to change into a faded hospital gown. Then the wait began.
The effect of the aspirin was beginning to wane and I started to shiver again. Mrs Wolkerstorfer managed to get me a warm blanket. I shut my eyes and tried to sleep. No luck.
Doctor Hillary Simon walked in at about 11.45 pm after a staff meeting, probably related to an impeding nurses strike at another group of hospitals on Monday Regions wasn’t part of the group but I learned employees at Regions were strategising on how to handle the possible increase in the number of patients.
She apologised for the delay; ordered a blood smear test, and a faster but less accurate test. She said the tests could take about two hours because the hospital lab didn’t usually get patients with malaria (she had only ever treated one person with malaria) and because the lab had their hands full with «people who had made bad choices» at the state fair. Too much booze and large crowd of people hardly mix well, clearly.
An hour later, nurse Jessica came in to draw blood. She was nice, tried to calm me. She said her Nigerian friend told her malaria was common in Nigeria and how most Nigeria carry it around without much ado. She said she hasn’t been to Nigeria before but was fascinated by the description of Nigerians living in the US in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s «Americanah». She wasn’t wearing a face mask.
Lyme’s Disease
At 3 am, another nurse, Megan, came in. Preliminary test result for malaria came back negative! Hallelujah. She said they suspect Lyme’s disease from a possible tick bite when the group travelled to Ely or Tracy. I couldn’t remember being bitten by a bug. The only incident I had, in Tracy, was when I slipped on a rock and got thoroughly wet at the waterfall at Pipestone monument.
Forty-five minutes later, Dr Simon came in with her supervisor. They said it probably wasn’t malaria and prescribe antibiotics – doxycycline for the Lyme’s disease. She also gave all clear to travel to DC as the disease was not contagious.
I was given a malaria prescription and told I could get it in DC in case the second test came back positive for malaria. We left the room at about 4.05 to pick up the medication at the pharmacy. My last recorded temperature before we left the hospital was 98.9F.
Mrs Wolkerstorfer was with me the entire time and stay awake the entire time. She asked a pillow at about 1am to ease her next as she sat on a chair in the room. She dismissed my profuse words of appreciation with: «any self-respecting host mom would do what I have done!» Angels live among human and clearly, one was sitting by my bedside the entire night.

Ozubulu, hate speech mongers, satanic voices cum artistes, violent agitators and their very lot seem to have occupied our national discourse and space in recent times. In fact, we have suddenly forgotten Evans and the kidnappers of the Epe, Lagos, school students and systematically fallen into a state of despair and gloom.
I had sat down through last week to watch the IAAF World Championship games in London and could imagine the peace and joy it brought to Londoners and lovers of global sports tourism. When Manchester was bombed recently, the city and its friends and citizens responded with a massive concert and outpouring of love for victims and their families, with volunteers falling over themselves to offer help and recovery from shock and despair.
The Nigerian nation’s response to haters of our unity and future progress leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. Nigeria is now the face of violence and bloodletting. Our leaders, from all indications, have no solution and cannot respond like progressive and voter-conscious leaders in Europe and America.
Our police have no answer to the daily killings and threats to our peace and future. All security agencies are deaf to intelligence and one wonders if it is rocket science for our security minders to unveil and apprehend the hoodlums that have chosen to toe the path of Satan.
In Nigeria, violence is a regrettable business done per second and there is no denying that Nigerians are now their own policemen, providing their own security in whatever way or means. We have lost our roads to robbers and kidnappers, our high seas and waterways to pirates, our hospitals to shylocks as doctors and our air corridors to oppressive foreign airlines.
Suddenly, the peace in our remote and once unreached villages has flown away in the face of a group of gun-toting demons whom even the ministers of God cannot arrest and disarm.
Even the notable culture of our people to look out for the next man has flown away. The truth is that these things happen elsewhere too but are quickly arrested; here in our clime, they are allowed to fester and become a national pasttime.
I had thought that National Orientation Agency (NOA) would respond to the hate speech mongers through strategic open concert of love and peace initiative with our popular musicians falling over themselves to appear pro bono.
At Ozubulu, I wondered, where was Father Mbaka and the praying Catholic priests and gospel singers, all gathered to praise God to have mercy on the living and touch of healing for grieving hearts of families of the departed?
A three-day open air mass at Ozubulu to remember the dead and cast away fear would have attracted the attention of the world to our doorstep as a nation determined to win the war against terror, fear and anxiety. It was done in London, Manchester and cities in the United States and elsewhere, where there are human beings in charge of the affairs of those countries.
Many years ago, when Jos, Plateau State, was burning and people were killing themselves, Otunba Segun Runsewe, then DG, Nigerian Tourism Corporation (NTDC) went to Jos and convened a peace concert that went a long away to bring the warring youths together. The wearied security operatives joined in jubilation.
If government has lost its voice and sense of purpose, where then are the private sector? Chris Mba, Tony Okoroji, Tuface, Davido and the so-called attention-seeking Nollywood actors and actresses should get together and say, no more crude violence as unleashed at Ozubulu, by putting together a peace/memorial concert to challenge the possible return of these invaders of our peace and progress. Nigerians must learn to hold hands together to resist the growing crime in our land. We must respond effectively to engender domestic and international visits to our land. Nigeria is a lovely country, more in many ways than we all can imagine!
To the mongers of hate songs, we need to strategically respond to them with Onyeka Onwenu and Sunny Ade’s songs on peace and love among our people. The National Broadcasting Corporation should drive the biggest all-time awareness on our airwaves to project our position to reject satanic music or concerts that will crash national unity and peace. Let all upcoming and famous disc jockeys sign up and stand up to be counted.
Let all our newspaper and newsmagazine editors and their counterparts on television send out reporters to hunt for developmental reports on Nigerians toiling day and night to bring about change at the grassroots and not dwell on issues and hubris that set wrong examples.
No doubt, Ozubulu and other such places have entered the records of national calamities but we must be strong to say they are not part of our culture and, therefore, must throw it back to the Devil and his ugly followers who want to cow us to our knees. Can somebody out there do something to help Nigeria?

Reading a recent attack on the person of Dr Dakuku Adol Peterside, Director-General, Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, by Governor Nyesom Wike, through a proxy, one Simeon Nwakudu, I felt obliged to render a voluntary duty, to state the facts in a simple, unambiguous manner, and next, leave the reader to the impartial judgment of the conscience.
The style adopted herein presents both Peterside and Wike, their personalities, motives in the respective portfolios they hold, and then, testimonies about them in the public domain. I shall sum my argument to proving that Peterside is refined, responsible and an invaluable asset to Rivers State and Nigeria. On the other hand, the evidence I shall plead in my argument shall summarise Wike in his true person while that treatise, tried as the author, a political appointee of Wike and therefore beholding to him, might, to arm-twist truth, there is no alternative to the truth.
The truth is a healer of the conscience except that Wike has shown to be a man without that human regulator. First, who is Wike? What is his personality? There is no doubt that Wike’s character defines his personality. Now to the specifics of Wike’s barrage of lies. To state that Peterside visited the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Chairman with bank statements and financial documents are nothing but a rehearsal of the Third Reich propagandist, Paul Joseph Goebbels, whose theory of «the big lie» sustained Adolf Hitler. This figment of the aide’s mind gives an insight into how Wike’s mind operates.
Everything, including serious state business, must be reduced to cash and bank statements. As to what Peterside told the APC National Chairman, it was never in doubt that he narrated the horror members of APC had been through in the hands of armed groups working for Wike Administration for which the author works for and labours, albeit fruitlessly, to prop its obnoxious human rights records. Wike has the worst personality image hiatus among governors in Nigeria. The Bible had Wike in mind when the Spirit asked, «Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots…?»
Then to the second, and the most critical question that I have to answer. Who is Peterside? What is President Muhammadu Buhari’s testimony about him? How impressed is the American Administration with Peterside? Peterside was the sole leading governorship candidate in Rivers State in 2015. His state-wide acceptance and popularity drew crowds to his campaigns. Truly, he was the candidate to beat.
Why was his popularity the threat Wike and his sponsors needed to crack? The single project Wike and those who sponsored him had was to stop Peterside by any means possible. President Muhammadu Buhari, a man, not given to flippancy, had this commendation for Peterside: «Peterside’s unanimous election (as Chairman, Association of African Maritime Administrators, AMAA) is not only a personal honour and an affirmation of confidence in his ability to lead AAMA but also places Nigeria in a pivotal position to rally other maritime administrations incollaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) towards safer global maritime activities.»
Unfortunately for Wike, nobody has such presidential commendation for him. President Buhari had acknowledged NIMASA’s encouraging performance under Dr Peterside especially in the fight against sea piracy through inter agency cooperation. There is indeed a new NIMASA under Peterside, but it is a story of hard work.
NIMASA under Peterside has a new direction. Under Peterside, NIMASA today is the beautiful bride while Nigeria’s waterways, including those in Rivers State, enjoy safety. In June 2017, Nigeria’s most credible news magazine, TELL, bestowed on NIMASA the prestigious Public Organisation of the Year 2016 award following outstanding achievements recorded by the agency in 2016, despite the economic recession in the country. Wike would not like to hear this as proclaimed on the day of the award.
The Chairman of the Awards Committee, Mr Babs Alasa, described the award as an honour well deserved, stressing that Peterside has repositioned NIMASA for greater recognition within and outside Nigeria in a short period. «NIMASA has done very well under Peterside, and even President Muhammadu Buhari recognised this and congratulated him when he was unanimously elected as the Chairman of AAMA. At present, 1,045 beneficiaries graduated from NIMASA’s human capital development programme, representing 42 per cent of over 2,500 participants sponsored by NIMASA. Credibility was the criteria for nomination.»
Peterside’s testimonials also have international recognition. Wike won’t like to hear his – the United States has recognised his exploits at NIMASA. Hear the verdict from America – «It appears the energy that NIMASA has at the ports is very tremendous, as seen in all the ports we visited in Lagos.» The United States Coast Guard (USCG) led by Commander Thomas Foster, on a visit to Nigeria, commended NIMASA for its strides in ensuring safety at the ports and expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure development regarding ISPS Code implementation in the ports. Through NIMASA, Nigeria now has about 80 per cent compliance rate for the International Ship and Port Facility Security, ISPS Code. Wike won’t understand this term. Under Peterside’s watch, NIMASA has targeted 100% compliance. In 2016, hear what Peterside said: «We have intensified NIMASA’s drive to ensure strict compliance with the provision of the ISPS Code.
The result is that Nigeria now has a compliance rate of almost 80%, as 114 port facilities out of the total of 145 ports and jetties in Nigeria are now fully ISPS compliant.
Let’s not forget that NIMASA was only appointed the Designated Authority for the implementation of ISPS Code in Nigeria barely five years ago when compliance level was barely 13%. Though 8% of the remaining 31 port facilities are currently pursuing compliance, our goal is to target a 100% compliance level writing the next twelve months.»While Wike is revoking Certificates of Occupancy of business chains in Rivers State, Peterside is pursuing Nigeria’s common good, creating jobs for thousands of Nigerians, including Rivers natives.
Wike is ignorant of the role of NIMASA so he should read up the function of a maritime administration and he will surely join to celebrate this pride of our country.While Wike has borrowed over N150 billion under two years, Peterside has moved NIMASA to a giant revenue earner for the country. My summation in this matter is simple. It’s on record that throughout the «abracadabra» PDP did in Rivers State through Madame Patience Jonathan, APC never lost any election in Opobo-Nkoro. Not even during the several rerun elections.
