So you're starting to notice those wrinkles, age spots and frown lines. Now what? Can you slow down the aging process? Can you reverse it? Many facial skin care products and treatments try to do just that. The trick is figuring out which one is right for you.

One place to start is your local drug store, either down the street or online. There, you'll find many over-the-counter products for aging skin. For example, there are moisturizers which come in creams, lotions and gels. Creams tend to be the richest, while lotions tend to be the easiest to smooth onto the skin. Anti-aging moisturizers have ingredients that help your skin hold in moisture, and they can also contain other ingredients to reduce the signs of aging such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and retinol. AHAs and retinol tend to speed up the process by which your skin renews itself. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles are minimized. They can irritate some skin, though, so be sure to test on a small spot first.

Moisturizers can also contain sunscreen ingredients, which is a good idea since excess sun exposure is a big contributor to the aging of your skin. Sunscreen is probably the best anti-aging ingredient there is.

Moisturizers can vary in price from a few dollars to a hundred dollars or more. You may not get a better product simply because it costs more. Some of the least expensive brands will be store brands. After that, you can find affordable skin lotions and creams from lines such as Nivea, Biore, Garnier, and Jergens. If you're feeling more extravagant, some of the luxury skin care lines include Babor, Kinerase, Obagi and La Prairie.

If these types of over-the-counter products don't seem strong enough, there are plenty of other option that are available. Chemical peels do just that — they peel the skin, which winds up showing the smoother, less wrinkled skin that is underneath. Dermabrasion is another process that removes a layer of the skin, by using a rapidly rotating brush. Both of these procedures will work for surface problems, but they won't help saggy skin. You can also exfoliate with prescription-strength creams and lotions, which can have the same ingredients as the over-the-counter versions but in a higher concentration. Lasers can also be used to improve the appearance of wrinkles and lines.

Fillers are another option. You can fill with fat from the body, man-made fillers or collagen. Then there's Botox, which works by paralyzing the muscles it is injected into. Botox can treat frown lines, wrinkles and crow's feet.

Face lifts are another option to tighten skin on cheeks, chin, neck and around the mouth. You can also tighten eyelids. A newer treatment is nitrogen plasma, a gas energy that is reported to help generate new collagen.

If you are planning to use any of these anti-aging treatments, remember that doctors and dermatologists are medically trained to treat skin and skin problems. You don't want to go to someone who has no training or credentials, because a treatment that goes wrong can leave you looking worse than before.
