«These people should just tell me they are scared I might have Ebola,» I thought.
Curiously, everyone who came a metre near me, was wearing a huge mask over their face, except Mrs Wolkerstorfer. She was thinking about it too. But was too nice to complain.
I was checked into the room about 10.30pm, asked to change into a faded hospital gown. Then the wait began.
The effect of the aspirin was beginning to wane and I started to shiver again. Mrs Wolkerstorfer managed to get me a warm blanket. I shut my eyes and tried to sleep. No luck.
Doctor Hillary Simon walked in at about 11.45 pm after a staff meeting, probably related to an impeding nurses strike at another group of hospitals on Monday Regions wasn’t part of the group but I learned employees at Regions were strategising on how to handle the possible increase in the number of patients.
She apologised for the delay; ordered a blood smear test, and a faster but less accurate test. She said the tests could take about two hours because the hospital lab didn’t usually get patients with malaria (she had only ever treated one person with malaria) and because the lab had their hands full with «people who had made bad choices» at the state fair. Too much booze and large crowd of people hardly mix well, clearly.
An hour later, nurse Jessica came in to draw blood. She was nice, tried to calm me. She said her Nigerian friend told her malaria was common in Nigeria and how most Nigeria carry it around without much ado. She said she hasn’t been to Nigeria before but was fascinated by the description of Nigerians living in the US in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s «Americanah». She wasn’t wearing a face mask.
Lyme’s Disease
At 3 am, another nurse, Megan, came in. Preliminary test result for malaria came back negative! Hallelujah. She said they suspect Lyme’s disease from a possible tick bite when the group travelled to Ely or Tracy. I couldn’t remember being bitten by a bug. The only incident I had, in Tracy, was when I slipped on a rock and got thoroughly wet at the waterfall at Pipestone monument.
Forty-five minutes later, Dr Simon came in with her supervisor. They said it probably wasn’t malaria and prescribe antibiotics – doxycycline for the Lyme’s disease. She also gave all clear to travel to DC as the disease was not contagious.
I was given a malaria prescription and told I could get it in DC in case the second test came back positive for malaria. We left the room at about 4.05 to pick up the medication at the pharmacy. My last recorded temperature before we left the hospital was 98.9F.
Mrs Wolkerstorfer was with me the entire time and stay awake the entire time. She asked a pillow at about 1am to ease her next as she sat on a chair in the room. Our police have no answer to the daily killings and threats to our peace and future. All security agencies are deaf to intelligence and one wonders if it is rocket science for our security minders to unveil and apprehend the hoodlums that have chosen to toe the path of Satan.

President Muhammadu Buhari, a man, not given to flippancy, had this commendation for Peterside: «Peterside’s unanimous election (as Chairman, Association of African Maritime Administrators, AMAA) is not only a personal honour and an affirmation of confidence in his ability to lead AAMA but also places Nigeria in a pivotal position to rally other maritime administrations incollaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) towards safer global maritime activities.»
Unfortunately for Wike, nobody has such presidential commendation for him. President Buhari had acknowledged NIMASA’s encouraging performance under Dr Peterside especially in the fight against sea piracy through inter agency cooperation. There is indeed a new NIMASA under Peterside, but it is a story of hard work.
NIMASA under Peterside has a new direction. Under Peterside, NIMASA today is the beautiful bride while Nigeria’s waterways, including those in Rivers State, enjoy safety. In June 2017, Nigeria’s most credible news magazine, TELL, bestowed on NIMASA the prestigious Public Organisation of the Year 2016 award following outstanding achievements recorded by the agency in 2016, despite the economic recession in the country. Wike would not like to hear this as proclaimed on the day of the award.
The Chairman of the Awards Committee, Mr Babs Alasa, described the award as an honour well deserved, stressing that Peterside has repositioned NIMASA for greater recognition within and outside Nigeria in a short period. «NIMASA has done very well under Peterside, and even President Muhammadu Buhari recognised this and congratulated him when he was unanimously elected as the Chairman of AAMA. At present, 1,045 beneficiaries graduated from NIMASA’s human capital development programme, representing 42 per cent of over 2,500 participants sponsored by NIMASA. »However, following considerable introspection, and in consultation with my political associates across the country, I decided that these are times when silence may not be golden and when, for the sake of our dear country and the future survival of democracy, patriots must lend a voice to douse the simmering political crisis that is trending towards a conflagration.
«For these reasons and the grave concern expressed by well-meaning Nigerians, I have decided to issue the following statement.
»I did not attend a meeting where the fate of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo was discussed, let alone decided, to claim that I attended any such meeting is a figment of the imagination of the authors of that story, my sojourn abroad did not go beyond my spiritual obligation which has become part of my life in the past 35 years or so.
«I was not invited to such a meeting, if it held at all. And even if I had been invited I would not have attended for reasons that are all too obvious, My antecedents are so well established that to associate me with a clandestine parochial project aimed at subverting the constitution will negate everything that I stand for and cherish.
»As everyone knows, throughout my political career, I have stoutly defended the constitution at similar moments in the past when, as a serving senator, I spearheaded the National Integrity Group (NIG) in the Senate that paved the way for then vice President Goodluck Jonathan, to ascend to the position of acting president as required by the constitution.
«I wish to recall with nostalgia the statesmanship of the Senate as an institution which provided the political solution, by way of the novel „Doctrine of Necessity“, to rescue the country from the precipice.
»Why would I then descend from that high moral pedestal, from the status of a statesman, to the nadir of political juvenility and rascality at a time that summons all patriots, to join forces to stabilize our tottering nation-state? No matter how anybody feels, it must be acknowledged that Yemi Osinbajo is today occupying the position of acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the grace of God.
«Therefore, political opportunists and agent provocateur especially those of his All Progressives Congress (APC) should spare the nation this embarrassing conspiracy narrative that is domiciled in their party.
»What is playing out, with respect to the President’s health, is a painful and sordid illustration of the desperation of some members of the political class and the complete loss of humanity by some politicians that, rather than pray for the recovery and return of our President, they are busy plotting how to replace him.
«Is it not shameful that they are displaying such morbid desperation that negates both religious and traditional values to even allow their treacherous thoughts to filter out? How much more unconscionable can we be as a people to show such great disrespect for anybody, let alone our President? If Sahara Reporters and its heartless sponsors do not mind, I do and plead to be spared the agony of dignifying the treacherous politicians with any further reply.
The former Minister also noted that he wishes the President quick recovery, despite „falsehood painted,“ in the media.
Giving reasons for his wishes, Mohammed said, „Contrary to the falsehood painted in the Sahara Reporters story, I wish the President speedy recovery and that is for very good reasons.
“First by my cultural and religious orientation, I would not wish any other human being to die, not even my traducers because life and death are in the hands of Allah.
»Second, President Buhari has been one of my leaders since my days in the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) when, riding on his popularity and the grace of God, I won election to represent Bauchi South in the Senate.
«That was the pedestal that launched the dizzying political trajectory that those who smuggled my name into that gathering are trying desperately to scuttle, they will fail.
»For now, my main preoccupation is to join all those patriotic Nigerians who have been praying for the recovery and return of our President, if there was any time he was needed most, that time is now: his presence and leadership are required at this challenging crossroads in the history of our country."
Speaking further, the former Minister said, «At a time like this, when tempers are flaring up dangerously and fear has become the order of the day, what is required is for all stakeholders, notwithstanding personal ambitions, party affiliation or sub-national interests, to join hands with the Acting President in stabilizing the ship of state.
»Unless we are being hypocritical, Professor Osinbajo is doing his best to bridge the leadership vacuum created by the absence of the President, a vacuum that has triggered all kinds of dangerous political permutations.
«This is rather unfortunate. However, let it be sounded loud and clear that, at a time like this, the country’s leadership is expected to galvanize all stakeholders while the political class is expected to rally behind it to fashion a way out of the present crisis.
